The
spotlight was once again on Tulsa, Oklahoma where
the crème de la crème of cake designers vied for the
Grand National Prize title of ‘best of the best’ at
this, the sixteenth annual wedding cake spectacular
and Oklahoma State Sugar art Show.
Contestants staged a cast of stunning cakes
using design and styling inspired by sea and
shoreline. Contestants linked the completed cake to
artistically decorated tables that were required to
echo the overall theme for a complete and total
look. Decorating the table is just like coordinating
a fashion wardrobe -- all of the corresponding
elements must be there.
80,000 visitors attended this
Rolls Royce event, the only one of its kind in the
United States attracting food service professionals
as well as the bridal market -- a huge source of
inspiration meant to push the envelope, educate and
inspire.
Each year more than 80 competitors travel to Tulsa
to compete in this contest as well as another 300
who compete in the companion event. 600 showpieces
were entered.
Maritime themes have inspired artists of all
persuasions over the centuries. So it was timely
that the sugar art show included these elements in
the line-up. The sea has so much to offer; as
stunning visually beneath the waves as the
landscapes we are familiar with. Wedding cakes were
required to echo those watery elements while
retaining the integrity of a romantic cake.
Prizes totalled $96,000 in cash and merchandise for
both competitions.
